2017 – Year in Review
This past year, Team STEAM has had a lot of success and accomplishments. Here’s Team STEAM’s Year in Review!
This January, we started off build season with some fabulous sponsors and, for the first time in our team’s history, we were able to make a competition robot and a testing version of the robot to keep editing after the end of build season.
In March, we attended the Kansas City Regional and finished 15th seed as well as winning the Entrepreneurship Award, which honors a team with a comprehensive business plan to help them manage their objectives
In June and July, we hosted Summer Camps for students entering middle school where they programmed and built small robots with Raspberry Pis and servo motors, aiming to interest kids in STEM by giving them a chance to try out what we do in FIRST.
In October, we attended the Cowtown Throwdown and achieved a final rank of thirteenth and we had several members in referee training assisting with the FLL practice competition.
We hosted the first annual Kansas Cup in November, a practice competition for teams in Kansas or the Kansas City area. Twenty-two teams attended, not including our own team of rookies, and competed in FIRST STEAMWORKS.
With December comes a FIRST Lego League (the FIRST Competition for fourth through eighth graders) tournament hosted at Lawrence High School. Many students from Team STEAM will be volunteering to help FLL kids foster a long-lasting interest in STEM.
